Flexible Payment Solutions

Payment Options & Methods

We understand that legal representation is a significant investment. That's why we offer flexible payment options to meet your specific needs and financial situation.

Minnesota Legal Standards for Attorney Fees

Under Minnesota Rules of Professional Conduct, attorney fees must be reasonable and the arrangement must be clear to the client. Criminal defense attorneys in Minnesota have substantial flexibility in structuring fee arrangements that work for their clients, including accepting various forms of payment and property.

Minnesota law recognizes that clients have different financial situations and resources. While many clients pay with cash or credit cards, some clients have valuable assets but limited liquid funds. The law permits attorneys to accept property, valuables, and alternative payment methods as long as the arrangement is clearly documented and the client fully understands the terms.

Seamus Mahoney understands that you may be facing significant financial stress while dealing with a serious legal matter. That's why we've structured our practice to accept payment in multiple forms—including traditional financial methods and alternative assets—to ensure you can access the legal representation you need.

Our philosophy: Your ability to afford quality legal defense shouldn't be limited to those with immediate cash or credit availability. If you have valuable assets or property, we can work with you to arrange payment that makes sense for your situation.

Payment Options in Detail

Digital Payments

Credit & Debit Cards: We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover). This is the quickest and most straightforward payment method. Payments are processed securely through our payment portal and you'll receive an immediate receipt.

Bank Transfers (ACH): Direct transfer from your bank account is available for clients who prefer not to use credit cards. This method typically takes 1-2 business days to process and may incur lower fees than credit card transactions.

PayPal & Venmo: For convenience, we also accept payments through PayPal and Venmo. These platforms offer quick, secure transfers and are ideal for clients who already use these payment apps.

Precious Metals

We accept precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and other valuable metals as payment. If you have accumulated precious metals or are looking to liquidate assets, this can be an excellent option. We work with reputable precious metals dealers to fairly assess and value your metals.

Whether you have coins, bullion, jewelry, or other precious metal items, we can accept them as payment for legal services. We ensure fair market valuation and will work with you to arrange the logistics of the exchange.

Real Estate & Property

If you own real estate or have property assets, we can work out arrangements to accept these as payment. This might include a mortgage, lien, deed transfer, or other documented arrangement. Real property payments require proper legal documentation and title work to ensure both parties are protected.

This option is particularly valuable for clients who have significant real estate holdings but may be cash-poor. We can structure arrangements that allow you to preserve your liquid assets while still affording quality legal representation.

All property arrangements are handled through proper legal channels with appropriate documentation, appraisals, and title work conducted by qualified professionals.

Vehicles & Valuables

Vehicles: Do you own a car, truck, motorcycle, or other vehicle? We can accept vehicles as payment. We'll work with you to establish the vehicle's fair market value through professional appraisal and then arrange the title transfer. This is a practical solution if you have a vehicle you no longer need but cannot easily liquidate.

Collectibles & Valuables: Beyond vehicles, we also consider other valuable items including:

  • Fine art and paintings
  • Jewelry and watches
  • Antiques and memorabilia
  • Musical instruments
  • Firearms and collections

Each valuation is conducted professionally to ensure fair market pricing. We work with appropriate appraisers and dealers to handle the sale or transfer of assets.

Flexible Payment Plans

We understand that legal representation is expensive and not everyone can pay the full fee upfront. That's why we offer flexible payment plans that allow you to spread payments over time. Payment arrangements can be customized based on your income, expenses, and the complexity of your case.

How Payment Plans Work:

  • Initial retainer to secure representation
  • Monthly installment payments
  • Customized terms based on your situation
  • Clear, written agreements you fully understand

All payment plan arrangements are documented in writing so both you and your attorney understand the terms, schedule, and expectations.

Important Payment Considerations

Clear Documentation

All payment arrangements, regardless of form, will be clearly documented in a signed agreement. You'll understand exactly what's expected and the timeline for payment completion.

For non-cash payments (property, vehicles, valuables), we'll conduct professional appraisals to ensure fair valuation and proper documentation of the transaction.

Professional Assessment

For asset-based payments, we work with qualified professionals (appraisers, dealers, title companies) to fairly assess the value of items you're offering. You'll always receive transparency about how valuations are determined.

This ensures both parties benefit from fair market pricing and protects your interests throughout the transaction.

No Pressure Policy

We never pressure clients into accepting payment terms they're uncomfortable with. Our goal is to find arrangements that work for your situation while ensuring quality legal representation.
